Easter is an annual festival to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It's religious connotation, however, is less significant today. Christians or not, people take the opportunity to gather around to savor some traditional food. Easter egg is a must for the occasion. Window displays will be decorated with Easter eggs that come in all sorts of styles. Egg, in its natural color, symbolizes the sun. When dyed in red, it stands for prosperity and blessings. In western societies, many parents make chocolate eggs for their children. It is also customary for classmates and friends to exchange colorful Easter eggs.
In Italy, many people bring baskets of eggs to the church to have them blessed by the pastor, and then share them with family members. The villages along River Rhine still keep the ancient tradition of decorating trees with colorful eggs. People will paint colorful patterns on the eggs, string them together, and then hang them on pine trees. Adults and children alike will sing and dance around the colorfully decorated trees.
Young women living on the Alps like to giveaway red eggs around Easter as an expression of love. If a lady gives three red eggs to someone, that means she is in love with that person. In Greece, people from some fishing villages will roast lambs for Easter and it is a traditional custom for them to gather around to enjoy the rich aroma and taste. Aside from eggs, other favorite festive dishes include all kinds of cakes, biscuits, ham, cheese and cream. Some western bakeries will prepare special Easter bread with Christian patterns, such as cross and lamb, on them to commemorate Jesus Christ.
